Haemophilia is an inherited genetic disorder. Lacking the clotting factor in their blood, haemophiliacs’ body would not be able to stop bleeding once they are hurt, which would in turn cause haemorrhage or large bruises. Severe haemophiliacs could develop spontaneous haemorrhage in joints and vital organs that may lead to permanent joint damage, hindering their ability to move. In case of cerebral haemorrhage, victims could develop long-term headache, epilepsy, conscious disturbances or even life-threatening conditions. There are two main types of haemophilia: haemophilia A and haemophilia B. The latter, which was first discovered in 1951, is also known by the eponym Christmas Disease, named after Stephen Christmas, the first patient diagnosed with haemophilia B. With Christmas around the corner, the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society has invited former Hong Kong Baseball Team member and renowned actor Tony Wu to star in a promotional video, with a theme song performed by talented vocalist Michael Wong, calling upon the public to learn more about haemophilia and offer their blessing and support to the patients.

Born an active child and joined the Hong Kong Baseball Team as an athlete, Tony had his share of injuries and bleeding experiences. Sharing the empathy for haemophiliacs, Tony had the chance to learn more about the limits and needs of haemophilia patients in daily life and the objectives of the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society via conversations with Mr. Henry Lam, Chairman of Hong Kong Haemophilia Society, Dr. Raymond S.M. Wong, Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary), Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, member patients Hunter Lam, Jonathan Tse and Billy Fok in the video. Tony even shared a session of light sports including jogging, badminton and stretching with the members. As the bodies of haemophiliacs do not have the ability to stop bleeding from wounds, most patients would refrain from being physically active in the past. With advancement in medical care, haemophilia patients can now enjoy a more active and positive life with proper treatment and care.

The theme song Fight On was composed and set with lyrics by Mr. Kelvin Yuen, a blooming musician who has participated in the scoring of the movies Operation Red Sea and Hand Rolled Cigarette, currently pursuing the Screen Scoring Graduate Programme at the New York University. Performed by vocalist Michael Wong, who has just held his first concert in the auditorium of Hong Kong Science Museum, the theme song was tailor-made to convey the challenges faced by haemophiliacs and how they tackle the disease and live a glorious life.

Tony shared, “When I was five, my mother and I were in a hurry to pick up my brother. I bumped on a road sign, and the blood from the wound ran right into my eyes. My mother pressed on my wound and tried to stop the bleeding, but the bleeding did not stop. Eventually I was sent to hospital for stitches. With this personal experience, I do feel for haemophiliacs, who were born without clotting factor. They would bleed much more severely than normal people and easily develop bruises and hemarthrosis from bumps, so they have to be very cautious all the time. I am delighted to be part of this promotional campaign for the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society. From my conversation with the Chairman and the patients, I have learnt that with medication and avoiding the chance of bleeding, haemophiliacs can also enjoy a normal life. I would like to take this opportunity to call upon your care and support for haemophilia patients!”

Michael Wong said, “Music is my favourite medium of communication. With beautiful melody and lyrics, the most refined feelings and meaningful messages can be well delivered. I am most honoured to have the opportunity to cheer for haemophilia patients through music. I know that haemophilia B, whose patients lack factor IX, is named the Christmas Disease, thus makes it especially meaningful to present this song right before Christmas! I wish everyone a happy and heart-warming holiday season.”
