Ban’s Gig Drums
German Swiss International School Big Band

For Immediate Release                                                              29th March, 2012

Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show to speak up for girls through cultures,
arts and music, endeavouring to sustain their beautiful smiles.

Last year, Plan International Hong Kong launched the Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) campaign, inviting a number of prestigious Hong Kong women in town to be BIAAG Ambassadors. The BIAAG Photo Competition organised for the same cause was rewarded with hearty support and participation from the public. To follow up on its success, Plan is presenting the BIAAG Charity Show on the evening of 19th May, 2012 (Saturday) at HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre, HKAPA. The event is supported by the Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and the proceeds will go to the Girls’ Fund in support of the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance loan as well as other community projects for the benefits of girls and women in China, Pakistan and Ghana. Aiming to eliminate gender inequalities, the BIAAG campaign endeavours to defend the rights of millions of girls and to free them from poverty, thereby enabling females to stretch their potential to the fullest. Plan believes that the economic empowerment of girls and young women forms the basis for the elimination of poverty, acquisition of substantial benefits and transformation of lives.

The Plan BIAAG Charity Show enjoys wide support from the BIAAG Ambassadors and numerous enthusiasts in town. A huge array of performances will be presented, including:

  • Drum show – performing party: Ban’s Gig Drums
  • Ballet and jazz – performing party: Christine Liao School of Ballet
  • Drama – performing party: O Theatre Workshop
  • Martial arts – performing party: renowned athlete Miss Lisa Cheng and students of Fresh Fish Traders’ School
  • Band show – performing parties: A-Day, Dovey, ISoFeel and German Swiss International School Big Band
  • Guest sharing – guests: two Plan Ambassadors, namely Mr Alfred Cheung, renowned film director, and Miss Louisa So, renowned actress, together with five BIAAG Ambassadors, including Miss Christine Ma, founder and principal of JEMS Learning House, Ms Cindy Yeung, The Chairperson of  Emperor Watch & Jewellery Limited, Ms Olivia Yan, Artistic Director of O Theatre Workshop, Miss Lisa Cheng, renowned athlete and Miss Tse Ning, renowned culinary artist.

All the performing parties will put together their efforts in raising funds for girls in distant lands through cultures, arts and music. Tickets for the Plan BIAAG Charity Show will soon be available at HK$300 or HK$220. All proceeds will go to the Girls’ Fund, inducing changes in the lives of girls and women in faraway countries and places.

Mr James Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Plan International Hong Kong, said, “In developing countries across the globe, girls face gender discrimination that leaves them languishing at the bottom of the social and economic ladder. They are routinely denied access to education and health services, and often face high levels of violence, abuse and harassment. To fight gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of the poverty trap, Plan International has embarked on the BIAAG global campaign.”

He continued, “The economic empowerment of girls and young women is key to eliminating poverty, yielding real returns and transforming lives. Girls need equal access to human, social, educational and legal services. Thus, they must be given the power to act in their own best interests and the opportunity to benefit directly from their achievements.

We are very honoured by the support and participation of the BIAAG Ambassadors and other enthusiasts in town. All proceeds raised at the BIAAG Charity Show will be donated to the Girls’ Fund, supporting the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance loan as well as other community projects in China, Pakistan and Ghana. We need the support of every sector of society. Act now by attending the BIAAG Charity Show on the 19th of May.”
