Children born in Hong Kong, regardless of their gender, are indeed among the most blessed children in the world. While we embrace our bliss, let’s open our eyes and our hearts to care for the less fortunate children in other parts of the world. In developing countries across the globe, girls face gender discrimination that leaves them languishing at the bottom of the social and economic ladder. They are often denied access to education and health services, and exposed to higher levels of violence, abuse and harassment. To fight gender inequality, promote girls’ rights and lift millions of girls out of the poverty trap, Plan International Hong Kong, a leading development organisation focused on children’s rights, has embarked on a global campaign – “Because I am a Girl” in which we can now show our support by participating in the “Because I am a Girl” Photo Competition.

The “Because I am a Girl” Photo Competition is organised to enhance public awareness and inspire the people to reflect on the “Because I am a Girl, therefore…” issue. Since the commencement of the application, numerous photographs – creative, delightful, warm, funny, inspiring… with different kinds of variations – have been collected. Pointing towards the same theme of “Because I am a Girl”, the concepts, meanings, executions, etc. of these pictures can go in all different directions, leading the viewers to explore and reflect.

Plan is honoured to have invited, apart from renowned film director Mr. Alfred Cheung who is also an ex-beneficiary of Plan International Hong Kong, prestigious Hong Kong women who are noted for their achievements in their respective spheres to become the Because I am a Girl Ambassadors and members of the judging panel: Mrs. Christine Liao, JP, Arts Educator (Ballet); Mrs. Betty Yuen, Vice Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited; Ms Christine Ma, Founder and Principal, JEMS Learning House; Ms Cindy Yeung, Managing Director, Emperor Watch & Jewellery; Ms Alice Mak, renowned illustrator and the creator of the Mcmug and Mcdull characters; Ms Tse Ning, renowned culinary artist; Dr. Connie Wong, renowned pianist and winner of the Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong, 2010; Ms Olivia Yan, Artistic Director of PIP Theatre Group and Ms Lisa Cheng, renowned athlete. The competition is open to the following categories: Lower Primary, Upper Primary, Lower Secondary, Upper Secondary and Open Group. Interested participants may hand in their work before the application deadline of 1st March, 2011. All winning entries will be exhibited at Times Square. Act now! You can bring light to the lives of needy girls with just a photo!
