30th September 2013

Dear Principal,

Invitation to participate in Plan Hong Kong’s “Because I am a Girl – Donate a Pencil Campaign, in support of the International Day of the Girl Child

There are underprivileged girls around the world who are facing discrimination based upon their gender, and physical abuse such as violence and trafficking. In order to increase people’s awareness of the challenges facing these girls, the United Nations declared 11th October as the Day of the Girl in 2012.

Plan International, one of the world’s leading child-focussed development organisations, some years ago launched its Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) global campaign to promote girls’ rights, and to help lift them out of poverty. Plan Hong Kong has run several initiatives on this theme, the latest of which is the “Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) – Donate a Pencil Campaign”, running from 21st to 31st October 2013, to support the “International Day of the Girl Child (Day of the Girl)”.

Take a moment to think. A pencil – a simple, basic tool that we take for granted in this technological age - nevertheless represents a means to develop the abilities of disadvantaged girls in developing countries. It may seem a humble enough gift, but its impact on the future of these girls is immeasurable.

A very large pencil case will be set up on the Ground Floor, Office Lobby of The Lee Gardens, 33 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, to collect new pencils donated by the public. The pencils will then be sent to underprivileged girls in China and Ghana before this coming Christmas.

Nurturing students to attain all-round development is the aim of most schools, and charity work plays an important role in achieving this. On behalf of Plan Hong Kong, we would like to cordially invite your school to participate in the “BIAAG – Donate a Pencil Campaign”. We believe that once our children understand the value of helping others – not only their friends but also whoever may be in need – they are more prepared to contribute to society.

If your school is interested in supporting our campaign, we can collect the pencils donated by students directly from school in late October. For enquiries, please contact Mr. Robin Tang at 3583 3233 or Miss Heidi Lam at 3583 3310. We look forward to hearing from you!

Yours faithfully,
James Murray,
Chief Executive Officer of Plan Hong Kong
