Two-person band ISoFeel to create a new song
for Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show;
Call for community support to improve gender equality

Apart from “I so feel therefore I do”, the name “ISoFeel” also implies “isolated feeling”, expressing the band’s determination to present unique songs in an idiosyncratic style despite the cost of being isolated from the rest of the world. ISoFeel’s story began a few years ago, when Jimmy, a music student enthusiastically looking for a partner to set up a band, met LoLo at a college singing contest. Brought together by a similar passion and vision, the two soon got along, embarking on their joint musical journey in 2008. Jimmy takes charge of music composition, while LoLo performs the songs written by him, often accompanied by other musicians. With a strong conviction in the possibilities that music creates, ISoFeel has performed on the streets in Ireland, breaking through the language barriers with their aesthetic. Jimmy and LoLo comment, “Music can go much deeper than superficial love songs and karaoke. It can be used to address ideologies such as one’s attitude to life and values.” ISoFeel will participate in Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show on 19th May, 2012 in support of the Girls’ Fund, helping girls and women in countries such as China, Pakistan and Ghana of Africa, to better their lives and rights. Written especially for the occasion, the band will dedicate a new song that concerns the rights of girls.

Jimmy’s overseas studies in Ireland coincided with LoLo’s working holidays in the same country, enabling them to gain performing experience on Grafton Street, the breeding ground of numerous famous Irish singers. They believe that music is a bridge of communication in addition to a channel of self-expression. Jimmy says, “Grafton Street has been the gathering place for many street performers. In those days, we performed Cantonese as well as English songs. The passers-by might not really understand, but they did enjoy it and had good fun. This is what makes music wonderful.” As LoLo says, the cinematic aura of ISoFeel’s music owes much to their practice of performing with other musicians: “For example, we’re always assisted by the music community Dr Mellow, which enriches our performances with elements like the bass guitar, keyboard and erhu, so ISoFeel is actually beyond the two of us. Without the others’ support, there would not have been today’s ISoFeel. Even when we performed on our own in Ireland, we would produce various background music tracks using the computer in order to bring more layers and surprise to the audience.” Music is indeed capable of bringing people together. ISoFeel has received support from their musical friends for the Plan BIAAG Charity Show, and it is estimated that they will appear on stage in a team of at least six.

As a singer-songwriter band, ISoFeel produces songs that reflect their own thoughts. So what exactly is their “isolated feeling”? Jimmy explains, “Music can express a mood as well as our world view. The songs of ISoFeel cover a wide range of themes, including issues concerning society and life in general. For example, we wrote ‘Besieged City’ to express our views on the razing of Choi Yuen Village. The song ‘The Corner of Shinjuku’ depicts the poor scavenging food from the dump and resisting the chill on the street, in an attempt to focus more attention on the wide gap between the rich and the poor. I’d describe music as having its own thoughts but not any form. We can therefore make use of our own imagination and understand it with our soul.”

ISoFeel will use this approach to write a new song about women for the Plan BIAAG Charity Show. Jimmy and LoLo are greatly moved by the adversities faced by girls and women in some distant places, saying: “Women in the Middle East and the Southeast Asian region have been belittled. We remember learning from the news how an Afghanistan woman was put in jail after being raped by her cousin’s husband, and the condition for her release was agreeing to marry the rapist! Such things that we find incredible seem to be happening every day. What makes us feel helpless is that what we have to change is not only the attitudes and policies of certain regions, but also of an entire religion, government or even the world. We understand that there’s a limit to what an organisation can do, but we’re glad to see an organisation like Plan taking the lead in calling for public concern on the issue. We believe that as long as we act in concert, some girls’ lives will be improved because of what we’ve done. Please play your part in supporting the BIAAG campaign!”

The event enjoys strong support from Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and Silver Sponsor S.S.I. Holding (Far East) Limited. The proceeds raised will go to the Girls’ Fund which focuses on the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance as well as other community projects. The programmes aim to help defend the rights of girls and women, thereby enabling them to stretch their potential to the fullest. Check for more details on www.plan.org.hk.

About Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show
Last year, Plan International Hong Kong launched the Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) campaign, inviting a number of prestigious Hong Kong women in town to be BIAAG Ambassadors. The BIAAG Photo Competition organised in aid of the cause was rewarded with hearty support and participation from the public. To follow up on its success, Plan is presenting the BIAAG Charity Show on the evening of 19th May, 2012 (Saturday) at HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre, HKAPA. The event is supported by the Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and Silver Sponsor S.S.I. Holding (Far East) Limited. The proceeds will go to the Girls’ Fund in support of the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance as well as other community projects for the benefits of girls and women in China, Pakistan and Ghana. Aiming to eliminate gender inequalities, the BIAAG campaign endeavours to defend the rights of millions of girls and to free them from poverty, thereby enabling females to stretch their potential to the fullest. Plan believes that the economic empowerment of girls and young women forms the basis for the elimination of poverty, acquisition of substantial benefits and transformation of lives.
