For Immediate Release                                                                2nd May, 2012

Rehearsals underway for Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show:
Queen of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival Lisa Cheng unites with students from Fresh Fish Traders’ School in preparing for the Wing Chun performance.

Nicknamed “Spider Girl” because of her agility, the new Queen of the Cheung Chau Bun Festival Lisa Cheng, who grabbed her second consecutive win with a score that beat her male counterpart (939 points) last weekend, is also admired for her loving personality. After a brief night of rest, she set out to Fresh Fish Traders’ School the next day to rehearse martial art Wing Chun with the team of students who are performing in the upcoming Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) Charity Show organised by Plan Hong Kong, a charity organisation focusing on helping children in need in developing countries.

Barely recovered from her knee injuries, the second-time “Bun Queen” remained as kind-hearted as she is. On the afternoon of 29th April, Lisa joined the students of Fresh Fish Traders’ School in their last stage of rehearsals for the Plan BIAAG Charity Show, which will take place on 19th May at the HKAPA. As a trainer, she energised the performing team with her enthusiasm while helping them perfect a series of challenging Wing Chun movements. Benefiting from her patient guidance over such technical aspects as the execution of energy and hand positioning, the students all enjoyed significant improvement in their techniques. They also gained a deeper understanding in the connection between each steps via her personal demonstration.

As a token of encouragement, the “Bun Queen” rewarded the students with little “bun” key chains from Cheung Chau, which brought everyone good cheer. These dainty souvenirs were not missed in the team photo they took at the end of the day, and without a doubt, the students will keep on practising hard for the performance.

As Plan BIAAG Ambassador, Lisa expressed after the rehearsal, “I’m really honoured and excited to work with Plan again by participating in its BIAAG Charity Show. It is a great joy for me to perform with the students as a trainer. From what I’ve seen, they are all taking the show very seriously. I’m moved by their enthusiasm in practising Wing Chun by themselves at home. As for myself, I’m going to do a secret performance for everyone at the Charity Show in addition to playing Wing Chun with the students. I hope our efforts will draw in more support for the Girls’ Fund, helping more girls and women in places like China, Pakistan and Ghana, Africa improve their lives and rights.”

About Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show
In 2010, Plan International Hong Kong launched the Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) campaign, inviting a number of leading Hong Kong business women to be BIAAG Ambassadors. The BIAAG Photo Competition organised for the cause was rewarded with solid support and participation from the public. To follow up on its success, Plan is presenting the BIAAG Charity Show on the evening of 19th May, 2012 (Saturday) at HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre, HKAPA. The event is supported by Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and Silver Sponsor S.S.I. Holding (Far East) Limited. The proceeds will go to the Girls’ Fund to support improvement in education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance loans as well as other community projects benefitting girls and women in China, Pakistan and Ghana. Aiming to eliminate gender inequalities, the BIAAG campaign endeavours to defend the rights of millions of girls and to free them from poverty, thereby enabling females to stretch their potential to the fullest. Plan believes that the economic empowerment of girls and young women forms the basis for the elimination of poverty, acquisition of substantial benefits to society and transformation of lives.
