For Immediate Release 2nd April, 2011.

Mr Alfred Cheung, Mrs Christine Liao, Ms Cindy Yeung, Ms Olivia Yan and Ms Lisa Cheng officiated at Plan International Hong Kong’s “Because I am a Girl” Photo Competition Award Presentation Ceremony and Winners’ Exhibition, calling for community support to help improve lives of disadvantaged girls

Plan International Hong Kong’s “Because I am a Girl” Photo Competition, sponsored by Emperor Jewellery, has drawn to a close. Thanks to the support and participation of the community and school students, the competition has been well-received. It invited members from various sectors of the community to depict the theme of “Because I am a Girl” with unique discernment, acute senses, loving hearts and sensitive cameras. The judging panel includes (in no particular order): Mrs Christine Liao, JP, Arts Educator (Ballet); Mrs Betty Yuen, Vice Chairman of CLP Power Hong Kong Limited; Ms Christine Ma, Founder and Principal of JEMS Learning House; Ms Alice Mak, renowned illustrator and the creator of the Mcmug and Mcdull characters; Dr Connie Wong, renowned pianist and winner of the Top Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong, 2010; Ms Cindy Yeung, Managing Director of Emperor Watch & Jewellery; Ms Olivia Yan, Artistic Director of PIP Theatre Group; Ms Lisa Cheng, renowned athlete; Ms Tse Ning, renowned culinary artist; and Mr Alfred Cheung, renowned movie director. They have chosen the champions, first runners-up and second runners-up among the numerous entries from the Primary Group, Lower Secondary Group, Upper Secondary Group and Open Group according to the following criteria: thematic relevance, message, creativity, photographic technique and aesthetic composition. Besides, many benevolent members of the public have voted online for the “Public’s Favourite” award on Plan’s Facebook Fan Page. To commend the winners for their brilliant performance, an award presentation ceremony was held on 2nd April 2011 at the Open Piazza at Times Square in Causeway Bay with a winner’s exhibition to be held from 2nd to 4th April 2011 at the same venue.

Mrs Christine Liao, JP, Ms Cindy Yeung, Ms Olivia Yan, Ms Lisa Cheng and Mr Alfred Cheung made their appearance at the Open Piazza at Times Square for the award presentation ceremony of the BIAAG Photo Competition. It was unveiled by a spectacular performance presented by Christine Liao School of Ballet. Afterwards, master of ceremony Mr Roland Leung invited Dr Darwin Chen, Board Member of Plan International Hong Kong, to give the opening speech and Mr James Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Plan International Hong Kong, to present certificates of gratitude to the members of the judging panel. Designed with their own childhood photographs, these certificates made unique and meaningful souvenirs. Subsequently, another Board Member of Plan International Hong Kong, Mr Kerry McGlynn, handed certificates of gratitude to the campaign’s corporate sponsor, Emperor Jewellery, and Christine Liao School of Ballet, which performed in the ceremony.

Without skipping a beat, the guests proceeded onto the stage one after one to present prizes to the winners of all groups and to share their own experience in the event. Mrs Christine Liao, JP, first presented the awards of the Primary Group. Asked about her feelings towards the competition, she expressed, “The competition was full of surprises. The works were of high standard in general, making it difficult for me to judge. It was also heart-warming to see children’s support for the campaign of ‘Because I am a Girl’.”

Ms Cindy Yeung then bestowed awards for the Lower Secondary Group. She spoke with a big smile, “I experienced how everyone tried to bring out the message of ‘Because I am a Girl’ in a variety of ways while going through the photos. Some of them directly portray girls living in poverty, and a number of them promote love for girls in a positive manner. I am personally most drawn towards works that touch the heart because they provide us with food for thought.”

Ms Olivia Yan was invited to present prizes to awardees of the Upper Secondary Group. She said, “Photo competitions and performing arts share a lot of similarities: you’ve got to express a theme creatively, and it’s better yet if you manage to get positive messages across, not to mention the aesthetics on top of these. Every winner deserves his/her prize. I’m very glad to be handing the prizes to the winners here today.”

Prizes of the Open Group were presented by Ms Lisa Cheng, who said, “I know that many Hong Kong people enjoy photography and love sharing their lives with friends and family through photos. The BIAAG Photo Competition is particularly meaningful as it advocates fair treatment for girls. We’ve seen the loving nature of Hong Kong people from the overwhelming support the competition has received.”

Lastly, Mr Alfred Cheung bestowed the “Public’s Favourite” award and presented special gifts to four lucky voters who voted on Plan’s Facebook Fan Page. Mr Cheung shared with the audience his personal experience with Plan, “When I was small and my family was in want, we benefited from Plan’s educational and medical aid. I’m pleased with their return to Hong Kong in July 2009, which has enabled me to support them in helping the needy around the world. I also wish to take this opportunity to invite all the kind-hearted Hong Kong people to support Plan together with me.”

Mr James Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Plan International Hong Kong, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support for the BIAAG Photo Competition, “Although the event was run for the first time in Hong Kong, we are happy to have received substantial support form the public. The members of the judging panel had a tough time selecting the most outstanding pieces from the numerous entries received. I would like to thank the judges again for their benevolence and hard work. The voting for the ‘Public’s Favourite’ award via our Facebook Fan Page also received great response. We are indeed touched and thankful for the concern and support that Hong Kong has rendered to the needy girls across the world and for the ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign.”
