For Immediate Release                                                             22th November, 2011.
GeneroCity, a philanthropic project founded by sisters Andrea and Christine Ma, calls for support from Hong Kong citizens to donate their $6,000 from the government to support underprivileged children in the community.
Sisters Andrea and Christine Ma, both enthusiasts passionate about children and serving the community, have recently set up a philanthropic project – GeneroCity. While many Hong Kong people are brainstorming about how to spend their $6,000 from the government, the sisters are planning to give it away to those in Hong Kong who struggle to make ends meet in their daily lives. They share their vision of gathering their friends and colleagues together to join them in this initiative: “If 100 people got together and each gave away their $6,000, we would already have $600,000! With that, we can bless so many more children and families in need. We want to see Hong Kong people loving Hong Kong people. This is why we set up GeneroCity.” Punning with “generosity”, the name of the project, “GeneroCity”, implies the spread of every person’s generous love and spirit to all corners of the city.
Having set the target of $600,000, they are collaborating with HOPE Worldwide on their first program, the GeneroCity Education and Child Development Program. The Program will offer a range of activities, including homework tutoring, values-based education, extra-curricular activities and outings to over 100 children aged between 6 to 12 living in the Sham Shui Po district. These activities aim to expand the horizons of children from low-income and welfare-assisted families, helping them to build academic competence and confidence as well as teaching them the “Six Pillars of Character” – respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring and citizenship. Children eligible for the Generocity Education and Child Development Program will either be from new immigrant and low-income families; or have suffered from domestic violence and referred to HOPE Worldwide by the Social Welfare Department. In addition to activities for the children, HOPE Worldwide will also provide home visits, parent seminars, and a parent support group to families enrolled in the Program. Parents will also be encouraged to participate in visits and outings along with their children.
Andrea shares, “GeneroCity serves as a platform for people in the city to donate their resources, time and skills to children in need so as to give them a brighter future. In addition to financial donations, we want our donors to volunteer and spend time with the children, to be good role models for the next generation.” Christine added, “Thanks to the generosity of enthusiastic donors, GeneroCity has already raised over half its target. We are excited to partner with all of them to make a change in this city!”

About GeneroCity
GeneroCity, a philanthropic project of Citywide Renewal Ltd., is established by Andrea and Christine Ma in 2011, which supports children and youth from low-income families in Hong Kong. While Hong Kong is a developed and international city, over 1.8 million people still live under the poverty line and the wealth gap is ever increasing. By joining hands with NGOs, GeneroCity aims to help children and youth break away from the cycle of poverty, to give them hope for a better future. 100% of the raised funds will be distributed to the NGOs.
