JEMS Learning House

Press release: http://www.seedland.hk/press/jem/1601_Expansion/PR_JEMS_Expanding_Chi.doc

Press release: http://www.seedland.hk/press/jem/1601_Expansion/PR_JEMS_Expanding_Eng.doc

Focusing on the three key learning areas of moral, social and civic education, JEMS Learning House visions the upbringing of each student into a Junior Excellent Member of Society, and realizes it with Character Education comprised of developing children’s sense of identity, equipping them with strong social skills to build solid relationships, and promoting them with opportunities to serve the community. At the start of 2016, JEMS has expanded its venue to a second floor, meaning more students can enjoy the Character Education programmes. A lively celebration took place at the new floor on 10th January for the grand opening of the expanded venue.

The opening ceremony began with the welcome remarks by Mrs. Christine Ma-Lau, Founder and Principal of JEMS Learning House, followed by an opening speech by Mr. Antony Leung, CEO of Nan Fung Group. For the kick-off ceremony, each of the nine officiating guests was invited to represent one of the Character Icons advocated by JEMS: “Friendship” for Mr. Antony Leung, CEO of Nan Fung Group; “Giving” for Prof. Sophia Chan, Under Secretary for Food and Health of the Government of the HKSAR; “Respect” for Dr. Moses Cheng, Senior Partner of Messrs. P. C. Woo & Co.; “Uniqueness” for Ms. Helena Hui, Managing Director of Seedland International Limited; “Teamwork” for Mrs. Stella Lau, Headmistress of Diocesan Girls’ School; “Compassion” for Prof. Gabriel Leung, Dean of Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong; “Responsibility” for Prof. N. K. Leung, Chairman of SAHK; “Perseverance” for Prof. Frederick Ma, Chairman of MTR Corporation; and “Empathy” for Prof. Rosie Young, Emeritus Professor of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong. The guests were invited to sign a canvas for the Character Icon they represented, which would be displayed at the main entrance of the new floor as a constant reminder of the nine virtues for students and teachers. The ceremony was concluded after the closing prayer led by Mrs. Linda Ma, Founder and Chairperson of Citywide Renewal.

An array of activities, refreshments and workshops specially prepared by JEMS ensued after the ceremony for participating parents and children to enjoy. In order to further illustrate the significance of Character Education, two short films were showcased during the viewing sessions. Apart from animation viewing and game booths, children also had a great time among the Fun Photo Booth, Arts & Crafts workshops, Gratitude Graffiti wall and Scavenger Hunt, transforming the venue into a mini carnival full of laughter.

With the new floor, JEMS can offer programmes to more students as well as providing talks, workshops, lunch gatherings and parent-teacher meetings for parents. While JEMS has recently established the JEMS Education Foundation, the new floor can offer more space for the foundation work which will include planning events and programmes for advocacy and education in character.

Mrs. Christine Ma-Lau shared, “As we come to the seventh year since JEMS’ establishment, we have witnessed the growth of our students, teachers and even myself, as well as the development of our school. The expansion marks a new milestone for JEMS, and we will keep on giving our best for the days to come. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the students and parents for their support and encouragement for years, which have offered my teaching team and myself boundless motivation. With the opening of the new floor, I hope that we can bring Character Education to more students, so that more people can realize how wonderful it is.”
