With the vision of nurturing each child as a “JEMS” – a Junior Excellent Member of Society, JEMS Learning House has received great support from parents since its establishment in 2009. Every year JEMS’ Graduation Ceremony is an annual highlight for all the teachers, students and parents, as well as their friends and relatives to participate together, and this year the Ceremony will be held on 28th June at Run Run Shaw Hall, Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Having completed various activities that helped them develop a sense of identity and the social skills for building relationships, the young students are going to conclude the term year with their Graduation Ceremony, which will take the form of a charity carnival under the theme of “Share a Smile”. Students will take this opportunity to raise funds for Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate (HKACLP), putting the spirit of serving the community into action.

As usual, this year’s event will be planned and organized by over 100 students of JEMS. In addition to going on stage to receive the graduation certificates presented by the principal and guests, students will also offer a variety of fundraising activities offstage. Months have been spent for preparations ranging from planning game booths and performance acts, to handcrafting souvenirs for the charity sale, all of which involve students’ creative output and effort. During last year’s Graduation Ceremony cum Charity Carnival, a remarkable sum of over HK$160,000 was raised for The Society for the Relief of Disabled Children; this year the beneficiary charity will be HKACLP, as the school aims to enhance the public’s understanding and acceptance towards cleft lip and palate patients. The funds raised will be used to support patients in need of speech therapy programmes after surgery.

Mrs Christine Ma-Lau, Founder and Principal of JEMS Learning House shared, “Just like our school name, JEMS, I believe every year all our students can shine as brightly as GEMS when they take the opportunity to serve the community at their Graduation Ceremony. After going through a whole year of character education, not only have they acquired positive values such as empathy, responsibility and compassion, but also excellent teamwork spirits and communication skills. The Graduation Ceremony is a great chance for them to review what they have learnt and put them into practice, as an actual contribution to the community. It is our pleasure to work with HKACLP this year, and I sincerely hope that all members of the public can also join us in this meaningful fundraiser. Let’s show our support to put a smile on the faces of cleft lip and palate patients as well as their family – let’s ‘Share a Smile’!”

About JEMS Learning House
JEMS Learning House is an English-speaking, after-school learning community that focuses on Character Education for children up to the age of 12. The vision of JEMS is to see each child become a Junior Excellent Member of Society. JEMS focuses on building character and raising leaders. At JEMS, Character Education is comprised of moral, social and civic education. Their unique curriculum covers three key learning areas that are taught progressively starting with the child’s identity, onto close relationships, and then the community. JEMS’ child-focused curriculum aims to develop a child’s sense of identity, equipping them with strong social skills to build solid relationships, and promoting them with opportunities to serve the community. JEMS believes that education goes beyond knowledge and skill acquisition; education is raising children to be their best, equipping them with strong values to make the right decisions, and preparing them to become great leaders to make a difference in the world.
