Originated in Jiangyong County in the Hunan Province of China, Nu Shu has a history of over 200 years. Centuries ago, in the patriarchal society of China, it was extremely rare for women to receive any kind of education. Women living in the rural areas of Jiangyong thus developed Nu Shu, their own secret language, forming a unique way of communication among themselves. Sadly, many evidence of Nu Shu were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution of China. And with gender equality catching its pace in the country, Nu Shu has become unnecessary for those who are being educated with standard Chinese. An important page of Chinese feminism is now facing extinction.

Gloria discovered the topic of Nu Shu during her final year BA project research and she decided to delve deeper into the subject. She visited Jiangyong and got in touch with those who are still using this secret language, focusing on their singing, written script and weaving. Gloria believes the culture of Nu Shu stands as a powerful reminder of how contemporary women can empower themselves, to let others and the society at large to hear their voices. Via the perspective of a contemporary Chinese women, Gloria had rediscovered the role and values of women in a societal setting with visual and installation as medium of art.
