EDiversity “We Need a Break” Education Conference 2015:

While it was reported earlier on that 700 parents queued up all night for tutorial class enrolment, on the other hand, an increasing number of parents and schools become aware of the problems of overly intensive drilling on children, and thus decide to effect changes. The parent-initiated charity organisation EDiversity has organised its second Education Conference titled We Need a Break: Drill less, Learn more on 27 and 28 June. The event has also invited parents, teachers and principals who have adopted extraordinary approaches within mainstream education system, as well as practitioners of creative education to investigate the effectiveness of homework and assessments, and explore how children can learn more and better in a genuine holiday without assignments.

First day of the conference: the Chinese University of Hong Kong
The conference commenced with the opening address by Prof. Stephen Chiu, Co-Director of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK, who explained the origin and development of holidays. Following was the sharing by MrKenny Or from Little Green Feet, who illustrated how the family reading habit of picture books can create a bigger value for the community, allowing more parents to take part in the family activities and avoid becoming a “monster parent”. Dr Tsui Chun Cheung, Principal of Tai Po Old Market Public School (Plover Cove), demonstrated how his school has been responding to parents’ request for fewer assignments and drillings, but a genuine holiday. Founder of Angels Family Centre & Life Inspire Mr. Marco Wong narrated the story of one of his students, who overcame his dyslexic problem and enrolled in the Department of Engineering in a German university via learning in a backpacking holiday. Native English Teacher Ms Sarah Capel shared her experience of triggering the interest of learning English in the students of a grassroots secondary school in Tin Shui Wai. Ms Tsai Shu Ying, Taipei County Books and Reading Association, Ms Wai Wai Ying, Educational Consultant of Greenfield Education Fund Ltd, and Ms Percie Wong, Reading Education Trainer of Bring Me a Book, revealed the effective results of cultivating children to become book-lovers and replacing textbooks with story books in teaching English. MrHarry Wong, CEO of Kido Town, explained how magic education can facilitate holistic education. MrManuel G Somonte, Director of Business Development of the Finnish company Songhi, introduced an online songwriting platform that can assist anyone in creative learning. Prof. Tse Shek Kam, Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Chinese Language Education and Research, Faculty of Education, HKU, was joined by Dr Doris Cheng, Director of the Centre for Childhood Research and Innovation and Associate Professor of the HK Institute of Education, to explore the most suitable learning approach for children. Special guest MrIp Kin Yuen, Legislative Councillor, presented the survey findings on TSA by HKPTU, and announced his plan of urging for the cancellation of Primary Three TSA at the Legislative Council.

Second day of the conference: HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity
An opening talk was given by Ms Ada Wong, Founder of MaD and HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, on the topic of “Creative Education”. Afterwards, the venue was transformed into a carnival with over 30 participating units, presenting workshops of various themes. For example, some features well-received by parents included “Community picture books campaign” by Little Green Feet, “3,000 wooden blocks at your leisure” by Portfolio Categories, and the sharing of homeschooling families and the recently established Hong Kong Forest Kindergarten. The conference also invited “Floating Classroom” and “Sailability” to demonstrate how children can learn via a boat.

Cam Cheung, Doreen Ho and Nicholas Wang from EDiversity shared, “Following last year’s ‘We Need Choices’ Education Conference, we organised ‘We Need a Break’ conference as a refusal to the drilling culture in education. Both adults and children of this generation are so busy that they don’t even have the time to take a good rest or enjoy family life. Under the intense pressure, children find it difficult to learn effectively, while many health and social problems emerge as a result. Before the start of the summer vacation, we would like to invite parents and schools to reflect upon the significance of real holidays via this conference. Actually education can have many possible ways, so please don’t insist on the intensive drillings just for some scores, but give children back their time and family life! It would certainly be incredible beneficial to children, families and even society.”

About EDiversity
EDiversity is a charity organisation founded by a group of parents in 2014. It aims to gather the collective effort to encourage parents, educators as well as the public to reexamine the current education system, to allow deviant education modes that suit children’s need, and to achieve the ideal of educational diversity. Members of EDiversity come from a variety of backgrounds, including education, information technology, media, business and legal services. They are concerned that local education has taken a wrong direction by over-emphasising examination results and intellectual performance but neglecting the physical and mental developments of individual students. Via conferences and sharing sections, the organisation hopes to promote education concepts that are widely accepted worldwide but misunderstood in Hong Kong; by understanding the current and future needs of children and youngsters, it also strives to offer wiser and more flexible choices in education.
