EDiversity We Need a Break Education Conference 2015
Drill less, learn more, said Founder Cam Cheung

Having noticed the over-emphasis on exam results and the negligence of children’s need for wholesome development in local education, the parent-initiated charitable organisation EDiversity has taken an active role to promote alternative education modes from local and overseas through educational conferences. Riding on its very popular maiden conference “We Need Choices” last October, EDiversity is presenting another two-day conference this summer: We Need a Break: Drill less, Learn more at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativiity (HKSC) on 27 and 28 June respectively, featuring alternative teaching and learning within mainstream schools. “Originally, we were going to focus on the promotion of reading after Dr. Stephen Krashen’s last year’s great talk about using story books instead of textbooks to teach language. But then we thought most kids in Hong Kong are too busy to even have enough time to sleep, let alone leisure reading! If we want to improve children’s learning effectiveness, we need to start by giving them genuine holidays that are free of homework and drillings that are useless for their personal development.” says Cam Cheung, one of the founders of EDiversity, when explaining the name of the conference “We Need a Break”.

Hong Kong’s education system has often been criticised, prompting some parents to resolve to send their children for overseas studies. Yet EDiversity aspires to alter the scene of Hong Kong education bit by bit. Cam shares, “Why can’t we let our children take a real break and relax? In the end it all has to do with the fears of parents. We are worried that children might fall behind if they slow down or do something else that is perceived by adults as useless. This mindset is exactly what we would like to discuss and reflect upon during this conference – what is better? Practising to do well in exams or doing things that are good for the body and mind to face future challenges? If parents insist on a high-pressure approach, neglecting children’s real needs, schools and teachers will find it hard to relax, and vice versa. It’s a vicious cycle. Parents and schools are important partners in education. If more parents are willing to take a small step to change the status quo, cumulatively it will be a big step towards a healthier culture in the entire education system.”

It is Cam and all of EDiversity’s core members’ belief that the ultimate goal of education is to offer a balanced development for children in physical, mental and spiritual aspects, and to cultivate them as a responsible, empathetic and caring person. It is also important to equip them with essential skills to live independently. “We only have 24 hours a day, how should we spend our time? Should we reserve it for more assignments and exercises after hours at school, or should we treasure the precious time to communicate with our children, and leave some happy memories together? ”

The first day of “We Need a Break” conference will take place at Cheng Yu Tung Building at CUHK in the form of talks, whereas the second day will feature a series of workshops at HKSC, presenting various creative education methods offered by more than ten different education practitioners. “We hope that our participating parents or educators can be inspired to take some action afterwards at home or at work.” says Cam. “The difference between Day 2 and Day 1 is that, Day 1 gives the food for thought, and Day 2, gives hands-on experience and a platform for direct interactions and exchanges with speakers, and we hope participants will be empowered to act beyond thinking.”

In support of the conference, EDiversity has launched “We Need a Break” Facebook Video Campaign. Celebrities including former news anchor Lavender Cheung, renowned artistes Nancy Sit, Wong Cho Lam, Corinna Chamberlain, scriptwriter Lam Chiu Wing and singer-songwriter Peco Chui, and Green Power founder Dr. Simon Chau, have already joined and shared their ideas about what makes a real holiday. About EDiversity
EDiversity is a charitable organisation founded by a group of parents in 2014. With a central belief that every child is different and hence has different learning needs, it aims to spark rethinking in education among parents, educators and the public by showcasing various local and overseas education models and methods. Members of EDiversity come from a variety of backgrounds, including education, information technology, media, business and legal services. They are concerned that local education has taken a wrong direction by over-emphasising examination results and intellectual performance but neglecting the physical, mental and emotional developments of individuals. Through conferences, its website and other activities, the organisation hopes to promote diversity in education, and empower parents with information and a network of like-minded people, to make suitable educational choices for their children.

About EDiveristy “We Need a Break” Education Conference 2015
On 27 and 28 June 2015, “We Need a Break” Education Conference 2015 will be held by EDiversity, together with co-organisers: the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hapi Reading Club, HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity and La Violet Education. The event will investigate the actual effectiveness of homework and assessments, and explore how children can learn more and better when a holiday is assignment-free. Parents, teachers and principals who have adopted extraordinary approaches within mainstream schools, as well as practitioners of creative education will testify the educational and social benefits for alternative learning. Day 1 of the conference will take place at CUHK, featuring talks on various non-traditional educational methods, whereas Day 2 will have a series of interactive educational activities, many suitable for parent and child at HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity.
