Steered by its education philosophy of “Artful thinking, organic teaching and learning”, birdintree foundation, established by Ms Esther Liu, former Associate Professor of the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and recipient of over 40 design awards, aims at bringing about the power of arts through creative arts appreciation and learning, thus enhancing quality of life. In keeping with the foundation’s goal of providing creative arts education and professional service to schools and the community, the foundation is holding “Pulling at Your Heartstrings” Creative Arts Exhibition and Workshops that comprises of a variety of activities from 28th June to 1st July 2019 at PMQ, inviting children to unleash their creativity and the community to take a glimpse into fantasy through the vision of a child. To commemorate the occasion, a grand opening ceremony was held on 28th June 2019.

The guests arrived in good spirits at “Pulling at Your Heartstrings” Creative Arts Exhibition and Workshops, and entered the venue that had been transformed into a land of pure imagination. Under the enormous cloud-shaped lamp, the venue was surrounded with funhouse mirrors, with gigantic roosters painted by children standing tall at the back of the site, challenging visitors’ perception of shape and size while paving the way to a world where everything imaginable become possible. The artworks of the exhibition were displayed at children’s height, urging visitors to enjoy from a child’s point of view, as well as observing and listening with a humble attitude. Also being displayed were the monster-themed periscopes crafted by young artists, which encouraged both adults and children to experience the world in a new perspective through reflections. Story reading sessions, collaborative storytelling and shadow plays, and family workshops filled the activity areas with joyous laughter. Inside the activity areas, the centrepieces that manifested conviviality, such as a huge banana cushion and hand-painted horse dolls, were often changed to match the workshop’s theme. While on the other side of the venue, families could choose to lay down on the verdant grass and enjoy a moment of tranquillity. The festive atmosphere and decorations invite participants to immerse themselves into a world of picture books over the long weekend spanning 28th June to 1st July 2019.

After a brief introduction conducted by the mistress of ceremony, Ms Esther Liu, Founder of birdintree foundation, Mrs. Susanne Wong, JP, District Officer (Central & Western), and Mr. William To, Executive Director of PMQ Management Company Limited, Dr. Fiona Chung, parent representative of birdintree creative studio, Mr. Pang To, student representative of birdintree creative studio, and Ms Psyche Wan, Director of birdintree creative studio, were invited on stage to officiate the opening ceremony. By turning over the pages of an installation resembling a picture book, the venue was lit up, symbolising that picture books enlighten adults and children alike. After a speech by Ms Esther Liu, Mrs. Susanne Wong and Mr. William To took the stage respectively to each deliver a speech, in which they praised and congratulated birdintree foundation for hosting an eye-opening and successful event, thus sharing the power of art with the community.

To further illustrate the importance of art education, Dr. Fiona Chung and Mr. Pang To were invited on stage to share how the philosophy – “artful thinking, organic teaching and learning” – nurtures children’s holistic development in knowledge, affection, artistic perception, skills and sensation, in which the creative artworks featured in “My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition” and the thought-provoking workshops of “Our Hearts: Parent-Child Stories and Creative Workshops” would be the prime examples of the method’s fruitful outcomes, followed by a curator speech by Ms Psyche Wan, Director of birdintree creative studio. Dash Wan, student representative of birdintree creative studio, later took the stage to present certificates to sponsors of the event, as a token of appreciation. The ceremony was concluded with a VIP tour around the “My Toy, My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition” guided by participating young artists.

“Pulling at Your Heartstrings” is divided into two parts: “My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition” and “Our Hearts: Parent-Child Stories and Creative Workshops”. The former features art pieces from over 100 young artists from birdintree creative studio, while the latter welcomes picture book authors, illustrators, publishers from all over the Greater China region to host workshops and sharing sessions to demonstrate the exuberance of picture books. The list of eminent guests includes Ms Huang Li, mainland China illustrator, winner of Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award and winner of China Times Open Book Award; Ms Carmen Wong, local storyteller; Ms Cheung Wan Shan, picture book author; Ms Adeline Ko, winner of the Outstanding Chinese Children’s Picture Book Awards of Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award, and Ms Catherine Chan, parenting columnist.

Ms Esther Liu, Founder of birdintree foundation, remarked, “birdintree foundation believes that art is dedicated to improving our lives. It provides mankind with opportunities to live a positive, happy, and healthy life. By holding this open-to-all public event, we invite the public to immerse themselves into art and the delight of creating, as we believe art is an important instrument that aids us in expressing our minds freely. For ‘Pulling at Your Heartstrings’, we have chosen picture books as the theme, since story is a means of expression, whereas painting is a platform for expressing one’s mind. The exhibition emphasises that children are in fact extraordinary storytellers and toymakers, and they pull everyone’s heartstrings with their marvellous stories. On the other hand, parents, by enhancing their storytelling skills, can manifest their love and learn to love their children the way they want to be loved.”

The four-day event covers a variety of activities, featuring distinguished picture book authors, illustrators and publishers as workshop hosts, inviting parents, children, schools, educators, and the general public to relish the joy of pursuing creative art.
