(We do not solve problems, We play problems),更獲得「2021香港藝術發展獎——藝術推廣獎」。

Lost Child Project Hong Kong “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings” will present the first-ever-in-Hong-Kong mega environmental immersive theatre on 14 and 15 December at Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden, Ecological Education & Venue Partner of the programme, inviting families to explore the natural environment and take part in theatre performances and an eye-opening puppet parade, alongside an earth art bazaar, nature and art workshops and seminars to enhance their mental health. Invited by Artistic Director Olivia Yan, renowned actress Natalie Tong shows wholehearted support as ambassador and the host of walking meditation workshop. Olivia and Natalie joined for a media interview to share their feelings and expectations of the event.

Question: What are your latest jobs and projects?

Olivia Yan: We are currently busy preparing for the “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings” mega environmental immersive theatre on 14 and 15 December. It is our pleasure to have Natalie Tong as ambassador and the host of walking meditation workshop during the event, leading participants to connect with their inner selves via walking in nature. Natalie has studied with the internationally renowned physical theatre director and educator David Glass, the founder of the Lost Child Project, and has also been involved in activities with the Lost Child Project Hong Kong before. Her deep understanding of our concepts and her ability to share experience as a nature and sports enthusiast make her the perfect choice as ambassador of the event.

Question: Are there any remarkable moments and interactions that you can share with us?

Natalie Tong: I would describe encountering Olivia Yan, my respectable acting coach, as a turning point in my life. Her ideas always surprise me. For example, the concept of having participants taking part in theatrical experiences during al hike of four to five kilometres is groundbreaking in Hong Kong, and some might describe it as “crazy”. However, I have complete trust in her. She always manages to overcome hundreds of obstacles along the way when she decides to go through it.

Question for Olivia Yan: Recently we have seen suicide rates skyrocketing among young students. While “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings” aims to improve children’s mental health, what is your view on the issue?

The tragedy of student suicides has been raising alarming concerns in Hong Kong, a wealth society where such incidents should ideally be avoided. I have observed that a significant factor contributing to mental health issues is the loneliness experienced by individuals who feel being neglected. As a theatre artist, I found that theatre is a joyful and collaborative activity that unites people. Through immersive theatre, my goal is to convey to participants that they are not alone. Furthermore, in mother nature, where humans, animals, and plants coexist harmoniously, everyone enjoys an inclusive and supportive environment free from the constraints of modern society.

Question for Natalie Tong: What make you decide to become ambassador of “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings”?

Natalie Tong: I want to apply what I have learned from the classes of the theatre master David Glass, which have equipped me with a thorough understanding of the concepts behind “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings”. Previously, I spent little time caring about various social issues. After joining his classes, I realised that besides entertaining people as an actress, I could also go the extra mile to contribute to society. Participants of the immersive theatre come together to save the divine bird. To me, this thematic bird can also serve as a symbol of children.

Question for Natalie Tong: How do you benefit from hiking, exercising and connecting with nature?

Natalie Tong: In recent years, as I fell in love with running and hiking, I immersed myself more in nature. During a hike in Nagano, Japan, after finishing the first five kilometres, I realised that the upcoming path consisted entirely of steep inclines, leaving me no choice but to forge ahead. Upon completing the entire journey, my heart was filled with a sense of accomplishment and joy, boosting my confidence for future hikes. This mirrors life, where completing challenges brings satisfaction and contentment. I believe that participants in “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings” will also find the experience rewarding and valuable.

Question: As theatre lovers, what are the enjoyable aspects of this mega environmental immersive theatre festival?

Olivia Yan: In an immersive theatre setting, unlike traditional theatre, the audience actively participates in the performance rather than simply watching the show. “ÉLAN Eartheatre – Regain The Lost Wings” transforms the natural environment into a large theatre, where participants embark on a theatrical adventure as they explore forests, mountains and rivers. Through completing tasks with characters to save the divine bird, they not only enjoy the journey but also enhance their mental health.

Question: What are the values of performing arts in addressing social issues?

Olivia Yan: I believe that all art forms are about addressing social concerns and caring for people, offering artists a platform to voice their concerns and advocate for change. In addition to striving for artistic excellence, I believe that performing arts have a significant role in influencing society. In 2018, I invited my teacher David Glass to introduce the Lost Child Project to Hong Kong. Since social concerns regarding children and teenagers deeply resonate with me, I founded Lost Child Project Hong Kong, using performing arts as a tool to address the mental health of young people and children.

About Lost Child Project Hong Kong
Originated as an artistic project curated for young people and children by O Theatre Workshop founded by seasoned theatre artist Olivia Yan, Lost Child Project Hong Kong was officially registered as a charitable organisation in 2021, aiming to promote art to bring impact and transformation to society and young people.

In 2018, moved by the alarming youth and children suicide rates, Olivia Yan invited internationally renowned physical theatre director and educator David Glass to collaboratively launch the “Lost Child Project in HK” initiative. Drawing inspiration from the Lost Child Project, designed by David Glass in 1996, implemented in over 22 countries and utilised in United Nations leadership training, the initiative uses performing arts as a tool to address the mental health of young people and children, and rebuild their spiritual values and happiness.

With support from Tai Kwun, the project was presented in a larger scale in 2020 as “ÉLAN Lost Child Project HK”, bringing together professionals from the arts, social welfare, and education sectors to introduce 15 different art projects held physically and online. As Hong Kong’s first large-scale art event running in both online and offline formats, the innovative project overcame challenges brought by the pandemic, and successfully conveyed the core concept of “We do not solve problems, We play problems”, and was granted the “2021 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards – Award for Arts Promotion”.

In 2022, with continuous support from Tai Kwun, the project hosted the second edition with a theme of “'YES AND!...”, offering 16 different art projects in which participants could explore more possibilities with creativity, and breaking free from negative and pessimistic emotions, to rebuild the confidence and hope of every Lost Child and the young generation.
