For immediate release 14 April 2026 The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation advocates barrier-free access and rehabilitation through sports with “Patient Mutual Support Festival – Self-Help & Mutual Aid Sports Parade 2026” and “2026 World Parkinson’s Day Table Tennis Tournament” Online Version: https://public.seedland.hk/press/HKSR/2604-Sports_Events/
Manifesting its steadfast commitment to building a barrier-free and inclusive Hong Kong across cultural, sports, and tourism sectors, The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation (HKSR) hosted two vibrant sports events in April: the “Patient Mutual Support Festival – Self-Help & Mutual Aid Sports Parade 2026” on 3 April, organised jointly by HKSR’s Community Rehabilitation Network and Physical Fitness Association of Hong Kong, China, and the “2026 World Parkinson’s Day Table Tennis Tournament” on 11 April, co-organised with the Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Association and G. Vision Sports Club. Graced by the presence of government officials and overwhelming support from the community, sports organisations and patient self-help groups, both events achieved great success in the promotion of rehabilitation through sports. “Patient Mutual Support Festival – Self-Help & Mutual Aid Sports Parade 2026”
The festival featured nine interactive sports experiences guided by patient self-help groups – basketball, gateball, badminton, laughter yoga, table tennis, running for the visually impaired, golf, football training, and boccia, showcased the vital role of exercise in illness prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Exclusive sessions for persons with chronic illnesses and disabilities attracted nearly 200 participants, reflecting a strong demand for rehabilitation through sports. The event also offered a unique “role-exchange” opportunity, allowing doctors, physiotherapists, and social workers to experience rehabilitation exercises guided by patients themselves, demonstrating the power of mutual learning and support within the rehabilitation journey. In addition, sports companies and non-profit organisations hosted interactive booths to fostering meaningful exchanges, partnerships, and an expanding support network for patients under the shared vision that “Exercise is Medicine”. “2026 World Parkinson’s Day Table Tennis Tournament”
Ms Carrie Chung, Deputy CEO of HKSR, remarked, “Table tennis not only helps patients with Parkinson’s disease strengthen their physical health, but also offers valuable opportunities that bring them together and build resilience in tackling daily challenges. Showcasing the vitality and active community participation of patients, the event reflects the vision of HKSR’s Community Rehabilitation Network in delivering 360‑degree support for chronic patients throughout their rehabilitation journey. We believe that encouraging patients to take part in more community activities not only empowers them to overcome physical limitations, but also strengthens their right of equal participation in society, serving as an effective approach to the treatment and prevention of disease.” Themed “Ping Pong inspires boundless life”, the tournament carried the official slogan “Living life in motion with courage, swinging with perseverance to unlock infinite possibilities” – the winning entry from a slogan competition. The event was officially opened in a lively ceremony officiated by Mr. Paul Chan, GBM, GBS, MH, JP, Financial Secretary of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, alongside representatives from the Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Association, setting the stage for a vibrant day of competition and celebration.
Bringing together over 100 passionate athletes living with Parkinson’s disease from various regions, the tournament began with morning group preliminaries followed by afternoon knockout rounds and the exciting final match. Throughout the day, participants embodied unwavering resilience and determination, inspiring spectators with their commitment to overcoming physical challenges through sport. Guest exhibition matches further heightened the atmosphere, raising public awareness of Parkinson’s disease and rallying community support for rehabilitation initiatives.
Adding an artistic dimension to the event, a curated display of artworks created by members of the Hong Kong Parkinson’s Disease Association’s art classes invited spectators to appreciate how creative expression contributes to both physical and emotional well-being during the rehabilitation journey. The exhibition complemented the tournament’s spirit, highlighting the harmony between movement, creativity, and holistic healing.
