Timely and proper planning for end-of-life care and posthumous arrangements, such as defining asset distribution and medical decisions, allows elderly individuals and those living with chronic illnesses to face their final days with dignity, while easing the emotional and practical burden on their loved ones. In line with its mission to empower people with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and the elderly to live fulfilling lives, The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation (HKSR) is partnering with ForeverGift, a social enterprise dedicated to promoting legacy giving, to host a free legal seminar titled “Three Blessings” on 7 February 2026. The seminar will be hosted by Ms Ryanne Lai, lawyer and co-founder of ForeverGift, who will share professional insights on three key legal instruments – the will, the enduring power of attorney, and the advance medical directive – collectively referred to as the “Three Blessings”. On-site free legal consultation services will also be available, offering participants a valuable opportunity to understand the importance of making appropriate legal and personal arrangements as they approach the final chapter of life.

The term “Three Blessings” refers to three essential legal instruments – the will, the enduring power of attorney, and the advance medical directive. Establishing these instruments while individuals, particularly the elderly or those with chronic illnesses, remain mentally sound helps safeguard their wishes regarding life-sustaining treatment and ensure the proper distribution of their assets after death. Doing so also minimises the risk of misunderstandings or disputes among family members and loved ones.

Will: A will ensures that, upon the passing of the testator, their accumulated assets are distributed according to their wishes to designated individuals or organisations. It helps simplify the probate process and reduce the likelihood of inheritance disputes. By including a charitable bequest, individuals can also leave behind a meaningful legacy of love and care.

Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA): An EPA allows an individual to appoint one or more trusted relatives or friends to manage their financial affairs should they lose mental capacity due to conditions such as a stroke, coma, or dementia. This legal arrangement helps minimise difficulties in accessing and managing personal assets during periods of incapacity.

Advance Medical Directive (AMD): An advance directive enables individuals to clearly communicate their medical preferences in advance, ensuring that their families and healthcare teams are fully aware of their wishes. If they choose to refuse life‑sustaining treatments – such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, mechanical ventilation, or tube feeding – at the end of life, the directive provides clarity and helps ease the emotional burden on loved ones.

Dr. Pamela Leung, CEO of HKSR, remarks, “It is HKSR’s core vision to empower persons with disabilities, chronic illnesses and the elderly to live fulfilling lives with dignity. As public awareness grows around the importance of proper asset planning and medical decision-planning toward life’s final stage, we are pleased to collaborate with ForeverGift to host this free legal seminar. Through professional guidance on wills, enduring powers of attorney, and advance medical directives – key legal instruments that help individuals handle complex matters with clarity and peace of mind – we hope that participants will consider supporting our service development via legacy giving, so that their love and care for those in need can be carried forward.”

Ms Ryanne Lai, lawyer and co-founder of ForeverGift, remarks, “The achievements and wealth accumulated over a lifetime are like the radiant energy of the sun. Just as the moon reflects sunlight to brighten the Earth, ForeverGift reflects the heartfelt generosity of donors through legacy giving, transforming their support into a lasting source of inspiration and motivation for charitable organisations to remain steadfast to their mission. Such kindness not only brings light and hope to the lives of the vulnerable, but also helps build a brighter future for generations to come.”
