Event ambassador Terrance Lau and cycling athlete Vivian Ma joined hands with Mr. Henry Lam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society, Dr. Raymond S.M. Wong, Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary), Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Professor Godfrey Chan, Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, to officially launch the “We Care • Fight Haemophilia” campaign at MOSTown, inviting the public to register the time and mileage achieved by cycling between 23rd December 2021 to 17th April 2022 (World Haemophilia Day). The accumulated results will reflect the support rendered by the city to patients suffering from haemophilia. A virtual cycling experience is available at L2 Atrium C of MOSTown from 23rd to 31st December, in which the time and mileage achieved will be included in the record of “We Care • Fight Haemophilia”, marking a sensational kick-off of the four-month campaign.

Taking inspiration from the logo of the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society, the venue of the kick-off ceremony was decorated in the colour theme of red and white, delivering energy and vibrance. The ceremony was commenced with sharings by Mr. Henry Lam, who candidly talked about his struggle against haemophilia, Dr. Raymond S.M. Wong, who spoke about the treatments of haemophilia, and Professor Godfrey Chan, who shared his insights on taking care of children with haemophilia, followed by an introduction of the “We Care • Fight Haemophilia” campaign by Mr. Henry Lam. The attending guests were then invited to witness the debut screening of the campaign video starring event ambassador Terrance Lau, former member of the Hong Kong Cycling Team and Asian Games silver medalist Vivian Ma, up-and-coming actors Bruce Tong, Chris Tong, Henick Chou and Christopher Sin, Chairman Henry Lam and his two daughters, calling upon the public to participate in the “We Care • Fight Haemophilia” campaign. Terrance and Vivian gave the campaign a head start by achieving the first piece of time and mileage record via the virtual cycling experience. The ceremony was brought to a joyous completion with a group photo of all the officiating guests and the members of the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society who were present to support the event.

Mr. Henry Lam, Chairman of the Hong Kong Haemophilia Society, says, “Haemophilia is an inherited genetic disorder. Lacking the clotting factor in their blood, haemophiliacs’ body would not be able to stop bleeding if hurt, and it is possible for life-threatening complications to develop in severe cases. There are two main types of haemophilia: haemophilia A and haemophilia B. The latter is also known by the eponym Christmas Disease, named after Stephen Christmas, the first patient diagnosed with haemophilia B. Christmas, therefore, has a special meaning to us and we find it a good opportunity to invite the public to learn more about haemophilia during the festive season. We find it meaningful to take Christmas as an opportunity to raise the public awareness of haemophilia. As haemophiliacs are prone to developing spontaneous haemorrhage in joints that may lead to permanent joint damage, many of us have been prohibited from doing certain sports, cycling for instance, since young. However, with the advancement of technology and the availability of preventive measures and appropriate treatment nowadays, haemophiliacs can live an active and vibrant lifestyle, and enjoy life to the fullest. This is the message we want to promote via the ‘We Care Fight Haemophilia’ campaign.”

Dr. Raymond S.M. Wong, Clinical Associate Professor (Honorary), Department of Medicine & Therapeutics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, remarks, “Typically inherited from one’s parent through an X chromosome, haemophilia mostly affects male while female would be a gene carrier, with only a few of them having symptoms. I wish that the public would understand and accept haemophilia, for instance, the disease is not contagious, no one will be infected by sharing a meal or living together with a patient. As technology advances, the influence of the disease to the patient is getting less and less significant. I am delighted to see breakthroughs in haemophilia treatment including the availability of long-acting factors in Hong Kong, which reduces the frequency and time of injections, hence improve the patients’ quality of life. If gene therapy were to be successful in the future, the patients could further envision a brighter prospect.”

Professor Godfrey Chan of the Department of Paediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, says, “The symptoms of babies with haemophilia are rarely identified until toddler age, when they are prone to falling and forming bruises. Parents should immediately consult a doctor if they detect abnormal bleeding in their children, be it in the muscles or in the joints. Doctors will prescribe medications with coagulation factors to keep the conditions under control. With preventive treatments available nowadays, children suffering from haemophilia can take part in PE lessons and live a normal life.”

Terrance Lau, who has been busy shooting his new movie, is delighted to support this meaningful event, and says, “I believe in achieving balance in life – despite my busy work schedule, I am happy to have a chance to participate in this meaningful campaign. Please join me in registering the time and mileage achieved by cycling, be it cycling outdoor, in a gym, or riding a virtual bike, by submitting the records via hkhscampaign.com between 23rd December 2021 to 17th April 2022 (World Haemophilia Day) to the patients on in their fights against haemophilia.”

Retired from being a professional athlete, now a student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and getting ready for a study exchange at the hotel management school of the renowned Cornell University in the United States, Vivian still enjoys cycling as a hobby, and says, “I am done with my training days but cycling is still dear to my heart. I hope you will all find your share of fun in cycling while at the same time, support the charitable cause of ‘We Care Fight Haemophilia’ campaign.”
