Community support for Plans Donate a Pencil Campaign is a great success; over 100,000 pencils collected

Press release: http://www.seedland.hk/press/plan/pencil/8/PLAN_DaP_result_E_final.doc

The “Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) – Donate a Pencil Campaign” launched by Plan International Hong Kong in late October collected an amazing total of 100,000 pencils during the 11-day campaign. The pencils will be delivered to girls in Shaanxi Province in China and in Ghana in Africa before Christmas.

There was overwhelming support from the community, with the public not only posting the pencils into the gigantic collection box at the Office Lobby of The Lee Gardens in Causeway Bay, but also visiting Plan’s office with their donations. Across the board, people dug deep into their pockets to buy new boxes of pencils or into their stores to contribute existing supplies.

Peer groups from boys’, girls’ and co-educational schools got behind the campaign in a big way, with some schools electing to initiate mini-collection points to allow their students to donate conveniently and directly. At one school, whose own foundations were built on providing education for disadvantaged girls in Hong Kong, the campaign was an object lesson of its principles in action, an effort embedded in its DNA.
Such was the supporters’ enthusiasm for a simple but effective idea that Plan staff were having to empty the giant pencil box continually, from the very start of the campaign till close on the last day.

Mr. James Murray, Chief Executive Officer of Plan International Hong Kong, said, “We have been tremendously moved by the response to the campaign that will benefit so many girls in Shaanxi and Ghana. We sincerely thank everyone, from the individual donors, to companies and to the great principals and teachers in schools who were all driving forces in contributing to its success. Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our main sponsor, Emperor Watch & Jewellery, and the venue sponsor, Hysan Development Company Limited. Without their support, the campaign would not have been possible!”
