Since its launch in 2010, Plan’s Because I am a Girl campaign (BIAAG) has gained the support of a group of notable ambassadors comprising of prestigious female figures in Hong Kong who are noted for their achievements in their respective disciplines, which include Ms. Cindy Yeung, Chairperson of Emperor Watch and Jewellery, Mrs. Christine Liao, JP, Arts Educator (Ballet) and Ms. Lisa Cheng, renowned athlete. All three of them attended the “Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) – Donate a Pencil Campaign” in support of “International Day of the Girl Child (Day of the Girl)*”, hoping to collect new pencils – a simple and basic tool that we take for granted in this technological age – from the public and hand them to the underprivileged girls in Mainland China and Ghana. The campaign runs from 21st to 31st October 2013. A gigantic pencil case will be set up on the Ground Floor, Office Lobby of The Lee Gardens, 33 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay to collect new pencils, which will be sent to the girls before this coming Christmas.

Ms. Cindy Yeung, as well as the Emperor Jewellery, has supported Plan BIAAG events ever since 2010, she shared, “‘BIAAG – Donate a Pencil Campaign’ this year is one of the most direct ways to help disadvantaged girls. In some developing countries’ families, while boys would certainly be the first to get the learning tools due to insufficient resources, I believe girls also got their potentials to shine. As long as healthy environment for growth and appropriate education resources are provided, girls will successfully benefit our society now and for the future!”

Being an outstanding performing artist, an inspiring teacher, a producer of huge-scale dance shows and an original choreographer, Mrs. Christine Liao is experienced with children. She believes that girls have infinite potential to shine. She said, “Since 1964, the Christine Liao School of Ballet has nurtured world-class ballerinas who include principals of the Royal Ballet and other international groups, as well as winners of the Adeline Genée Gold Medal – all of them were simply little girls with passion on ballet. What I see is that children do have dreams, regardless of their gender and background. Once the underprivileged girls are provided with education opportunities, they can make significant achievements hence great contributions to society. I sincerely call upon the public to support the ‘BIAAG – Donate a Pencil Campaign’.”

BIAAG Ambassador Ms. Lisa Cheng is a renowned athlete who won over 30 individual championships and has reached the top spot several times in various global sporting events. She has been actively taking part in the BIAAG events since 2010. She shared, “What an athlete needs is perseverance and courage. No matter how difficult the challenge is, we can make a breakthrough and get better results if we face it with courage and hard work. Meanwhile, girls in poor regions not only need courage and perseverance, but also opportunities. In the regions where girls are treated unequally, the plight they are facing is beyond our imaginations. I hope everyone can support this meaningful “BIAAG – Donate a Pencil Campaign” and to make a difference in these girls’ life”

*Remark: The United Nations declared 11th October as the Day of the Girl in 2012, hoping to increase awareness of the gender-based discrimination faced by girls worldwide.
