For Immediate Release 15th May, 2012 O Theatre Workshop x TEENS to act their part for disadvantaged girls by presenting an excerpt from “I am not a Hong Kong Kid” at Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show. Photos: http://www.seedland.hk/press/plan/olivia/ The Plan Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) Charity Show to be held on 19th May, 2012 aims to support the organization’s Girls’ Funds, which endeavour to help disadvantaged girls and women in developing countries like China, Pakistan and Ghana, Africa improve their living standards and rights. Among the various performing parties that are pulling out the final stops before the show takes place are the O Theatre, founded by Artistic Director Olivia Yan, and TEENS who are going to present an excerpt of the drama “I am not a Hong Kong Kid” and a selection of their personal stories. In a time when stereotypes of pampered “Hong Kong Kid” dominate news features about our young generation, it is particularly meaningful that these children stand up to “act back” from their own perspective in front of an adult audience while spreading their love to deprived girls in faraway places. Aged between ten and thirteen, the group of nine has accumulated rich experience in theatre art through training at PIP School, founded by Olivia Yan, and various stage performances. The drama “I am not a Hong Kong Kid”, which will be replayed in excerpt at the Plan Charity Show, is a production of TEENS, the drama team they have formed. Handling every procedure of the production, from rehearsing and blocking to lighting and sound, as well as administration and promotion, the nine TEENS prove with action that they do not belong to the spoiled “Hong Kong Kids” who are typically weak in taking care of themselves, controlling their emotions and coping with adversities. Beyond a self-expressive work, the play is essentially a complaint and a rejection – if not revolution – against the negative labelling. Plan BIAAG Ambassador Olivia Yan expresses, “Children in Hong Kong are blessed with medical and educational provisions. Unfortunately, pampered from sumptuous material lives and over-protection, many of them have become self-centred ‘Hong Kong Kids’. The BIAAG campaign provides a good opportunity to educate them about the fact that some children in other parts of the world are not even satisfied at the very basic level; some girls are deprived of and looked down on simply because of their gender. Though living in an entirely different world, we must broaden our horizons and look into the sufferings of others, lending a helping hand to the needy with compassion. With such an attitude, our children will soon shake off the notoriety of ‘Hong Kong Kids’ and grow up as loving children who are concerned about others and grateful for what they have.” Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show
About O Theatre Dedicated to the promotion of theatre art, Hong Kong-based O Theatre Workshop has leveraged on the cosmopolitan nature of its home city in producing quality theatrical works since it was established in 2010. The letter “O” is an intriguing pictograph. First of all, it implicates wonder and surprise, the elements that underpin founder Olivia Yan’s tenacious pursuit in art. Bearing the shape of a circle, it also evokes imagination for the boundless universe, providing a fitting metaphor for the stunning impact of the theatre. Finally, it recalls the full moon, a symbol of reunion in Chinese culture, illustrating Olivia’s mission to re-establish community relationships with love and care.
About Plan Because I am a Girl Charity Show In 2010, Plan International Hong Kong launched the Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) campaign, inviting a number of leading Hong Kong business women in town to be BIAAG Ambassadors. The BIAAG Photo Competition, organised in aid of the cause, was rewarded with solid support and participation from the public. To follow up on its success, Plan is presenting the BIAAG Charity Show on the evening of 19th May, 2012 (Saturday) at HK Jockey Club Amphitheatre, HKAPA. The event is supported by Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and Silver Sponsor S.S.I. Holding (Far East) Limited. Proceeds will go to the Girls’ Fund in support of the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance loans as well as other community projects to benefit girls and women in China, Nepal, Pakistan and Ghana. Aiming to eliminate gender inequalities, the BIAAG campaign endeavours to defend the rights of disadvantaged girls, to free them from the poverty trap, and enable them to reach their full potential. Plan believes that the economic empowerment of girls and young women forms the basis for the elimination of poverty, acquisition of substantial benefits and transformation of lives.
