For Immediate Release 27th April, 2012 All-girl band Dovey to perform at Plan BIAAG Charity Show Formally established seven years ago, all-girl band Dovey has bidden goodbye to old members and welcomed newcomers. In spite of the changes, core member Kay has never thought of dissolving the band. She comments, “I want to prove that girls are not second-rate. Girls are able to develop their potential as long as they are given the opportunities” – this belief coincides with the rationale of the Plan Because I am a Girl (BIAAG) campaign.” Dovey will perform at the Plan BIAAG Charity Show on Saturday, 19th May at the APA’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Amphitheatre in Wanchai. Confident in the unlimited potential of girls and young women and aware of the injustice that many still lack basic opportunities, Dovey is supporting the event that will help raise funds to improve girls’ circumstances in China, Pakistan and Ghana in Africa. Guitarist Kay and Bass Guitarist Ting are the ones who have remained in the band throughout the seven years. Kay says, “The team we have now was formed around two years ago. In fact, at the beginning, we didn’t try to look for girls on purpose – it just happened that every time we needed someone to join in, it turned out to be a girl who was more suitable. Gradually, this has become a distinctive characteristic of Dovey, which makes us easily identifiable. “Later on, this characteristic evolved into a kind of perseverance and tenacity. Even when there were members leaving, I didn’t want to dissolve Dovey because I wanted to prove that girls could also form a serious band that produced really good songs and to challenge the prejudice that all-girl bands break up easily. I’m delighted that now every member of Dovey shares the same vision.” Today, the band comprises five girls with completely different occupations: a student, a journalist, an air hostess, a creative media worker and a guitar salesperson at a big music centre. Have they really come together only for music? As Kay says, “A band only works when the people in it get along.” Indeed, the five members of Dovey are on the same page: they all see music as a simple channel through which the performers express themselves and at the same time move others. Initially named Lovey Dovey, which means joyful and carefree, the band decided to drop “Lovey” in favour of a more concise, easy-to-remember name, while continuing to impress the audience with their joyful music. In the Plan BIAAG Charity Show on 19th May, Dovey will perform a number of self-penned songs, including “Goodbye but goodbye”, which expresses the importance of cherishing those who are with us. Kay says, “We feel more and more the impact of departures as we’re growing up. Very often we may not see each other again after saying goodbye, so we must cherish others when they’re present. “We’ll also perform ‘Hua Mulan’. Everyone must have read about Hua Mulan at school, and the message of our song is that the days when ‘a wise woman is twice a fool’ have long gone. Girls are no longer weak and inferior; we can quickly stand up again after frustrations. Please believe in the ability of girls and give them opportunities by supporting the BIAAG campaign.” The BIAAG Charity Show has strong support from Platinum Sponsor Emperor Jewellery and Silver Sponsor S.S.I. Holding (Far East) Limited. The proceeds raised will go to the Girls’ Fund which focuses on the improvement of education and vocational skills, provision of counselling services and microfinance as well as other community projects. The programmes aim to help defend the rights of girls and women, thereby enabling them to stretch their potential to the fullest. Check for more details on www.plan.org.hk.
