Steered by its education philosophy of “Artful thinking, organic teaching and learning”, birdintree foundation, established by Esther Liu, former assistant professor of the School of Design of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and recipient of over 40 design awards, aims at bringing about the power of arts through creative arts appreciation and learning, thus enhancing quality of life. The foundation will hold “Pulling at Your Heartstrings” that comprises of 38 activities from 28th June to 1st July 2019 at PMQ, inviting children to unleash their creativity and adults to take a glimpse into fantasy through the vision of a child.

“Pulling at Your Heartstrings” is divided into two parts: “My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition” and “Our Hearts: Parent-Child Stories and Creative Workshops”. The former features art pieces from over 100 young artists from birdintree creative studio, while the latter welcomes picture book authors, illustrators, publishers from all over the Greater China region to host workshops and sharing sessions to demonstrate the exuberance of picture books. The list of eminent guests includes Huang Li, mainland China illustrator, winner of Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award and winner of China Times Open Book Award; Carmen Wong, local storyteller; Cheung Wan Shan, picture book author; Adeline Ko, winner of the Outstanding Chinese Children’s Picture Book Awards of Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award, and Catherine Chan, parenting columnist. The four-day event covers 38 activities, inviting parents, children, schools, educators, and the general public to relish the joy of pursuing creative art.

“My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition”

Artwork by students of birdintree creative studio

The specially designed “My Toy, My Pal: Children Creative Arts Exhibition” features artwork by children aged 2 to 13. It invites adults to experience and navigate the world through a child’s eyes. Under the cotton clouds, the exhibits are displayed at children’s height over a verdant grassland, encouraging visitors to enjoy the exhibition from a child’s point of view, and observe and listen with a humble attitude.

The exhibition titled “My Toy, My Pal” asks the question – what does “play” mean to children who live in a materialistic and abundant world with too many choices and too little time? Exhibits are displayed according to age of the artists, to present to the viewers the creative transitions as children mature. By incorporating the five senses into learning, young children are given a chance to embark on a journey of self-discovery through play, and gain exposure to the surrounding environment. Some of the budding artists will take up the role of curators and lead guiding tours for visiting guests. This out-of-classroom experience allows them to hone their speaking, listening, communication and social skills.

“Our Hearts: Parent-Child Stories and Creative Workshops”

Book authors, illustrators and publishers of picture books will host story sharing sessions and workshops for parents and children

Picture books are attractive not only because of their appealing illustrations and poetic writing, but their magical power in translating complex and abstract concepts such as greed, jealousy or hate into powerful and moving content that fully capture the essence of complicated emotions, thus making life lessons a much easier subject for children to grasp. Both children and adults may find reading picture books a way to better understand and affirm themselves. “Our Hearts: Parent-Child Stories and Creative Workshops”, starring famous illustrators, picture book authors, storytellers, child experts and creative education groups, invite parents and children to work together to immerse in the enjoyment of reading picture books, through a series of sharing sessions and workshops.

Esther Liu, Founder of birdintree foundation, remarks, “When I was teaching at the university, I learnt from my students that our society does not care about training our children’s eyes to be observant. While we may easily take our ability to see as granted, being able to see does not necessarily lead to observing nor processing information. By holding this event, we hope to provide a diverse and in-depth creative art platform with for both children and their parents. We intend to demonstrate what it means to truly see the world through a child’s perception. We have chosen to have picture books as our theme because story is a means of expression, whereas painting is a platform for us to express our mind. The exhibition emphasises that children are in fact extraordinary storytellers and toymakers, and they pull our heartstrings with their marvellous stories. On the other hand, parents, by enhancing their storytelling skills, can manifest their love and learn to love their children the way they want to be loved.”
